ARTIST’S STATEMENT

For me abstraction is grounded in the reality of the painted surface. How do I know that reality? Like everything else in the world it is essentially a mental construct, something our brains create, based on the senses and a lifetime of conditioning. Similarly we are all conditioned to respond to beauty in the world around us, probably so our ancestors could recognize promising sources of food and shelter in their environment. Tranquil waters, fertile valleys, cloudscapes with life-giving rain, etc. My intention is for these works to evoke an emotional resonance in the viewer based on this deeply human response to nature. What is nature, after all? Is not the reality of paint the same reality as hills and rivers and wetlands? I’m after the landscape of the mind, not a depiction of a particular place.

I create the painted surface in two ways: by intention and by accident. Intentional marks are made with brushes giving some degree of control. They can be more or less loose, or painterly, but eventually as they build up they tend to coalesce. Painting knives add the element of randomness. As these marks build up they remain chaotic. I find the best results in the interplay between the two techniques, a push and pull between order and chance, nature and artifice, reality and illusion.

BIOGRAPHY

JP Stamos was born in Hartford Connecticut in 1962. He grew up in the suburb of West Hartford. Showing promise in art he was encouraged to participate in a variety of arts education programs when he was in middle and high school. These included group and individual classes and collaborative projects through local schools and institutions such as the University of Hartford and the Wadsworth Atheneum. JP graduated from high School in 1980.

JP then moved to Providence, RI to attend Rhode Island School of Design. While there he learned the essentials of art and design and participated in numerous exhibitions. He graduated in 1984 with his BFA degree in painting.
In 1988 he went to the Midwest for graduate studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There he pursued both painting and digital art. He received his MFA degree in 1989.

After graduation he began working in media design, specifically motion graphics for video post-production. Throughout this time, he continued to make paintings and began showing his art at the DeGraaf Fine Art Gallery in Chicago. He had his first solo exhibition there in 1992. He continued showing there and participated in several group shows around town. In 1994 JP had his second solo exhibition at the Carole Jones Gallery also in Chicago.

In 1995 JP Stamos and his future wife Christa moved to Milwaukee, WI for work as art director at Wisconsin’s premiere video post-production facility The Finishing Group. Throughout this period, and up to the present, JP has been honored with numerous awards for excellence in media arts and graphic design in television commercials, graphic animation, product and packaging design.
By 1998 newly married and ready for a fresh start somewhere warmer, the Stamoses and their two cats moved to South Florida, in part to be closer to his parents. Having found work as art director at Five Star Productions in Delray Beach, JP exhibited his art on several occasions at Art Fusion in Boca Raton. They moved north to Jupiter in 1999. Shortly thereafter JP began exhibiting at the Mars Gallery in Hobe Sound. In the early 2000s, following the birth of his daughter, Jenna, JP began showing at the Broadway Gallery in Ft. Lauderdale and had a solo exhibition there in 2004. From 2005 – 2007 his works were exhibited at Beyond Décor on Palm Beach Island.

2009 was a year of change. Up to this point JP’s works had been primarily in a biomorphic abstraction mode. Now, with a desire to return to the roots of painting, he began working in a more representational way, creating canvases featuring seashells, clouds, and water, rendered in a hyper-real and/or subtly surreal mode. Since 2006, JP Stamos has been head of media and design at Fresh-Aire UV (a manufacturing company) in Jupiter, Florida.
